With a heavy heart we inform you of the demise of yet another Exie. Mala Sen, 63, who was battling with throat cancer, died on May 21 after a surgery at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. Mala was best known as the author of India's Bandit Queen: The True Story of Phoolan Devi, later turned into an acclaimed feature film by Channel 4. Our heartfelt condolences to the family.
Hema Badhwar Mehra, Batch of 1971 lost her mother recently. There are no words to compensate the loss of a dear one but our heartfelt condolences to the whole family Hema.

This is just to let you know that Anjali Sarup Khambatta (O-119), Batch of 1974 prepares students for the entrance exams of leading Public Schools, including Welham. She has 27 years of teaching experience of which 10 years was at Welham. She has worked for 7 years at the Council of Indian School Certificate of Examinations (the ICSE/ISC Board as we know it).
ALL the students that Anjali has prepared so far have got into the Schools of their choice! She's also great with senior level English and has taught students for the Boards with excellent results.

Laila Tyabji (Batch of 1962), is a designer, writer and founder member and Chairperson of DASTKAR, a Society for Crafts & Craftspeople. She has worked in the craft and development sector for over three decades. In 2003 she was awarded the AID TO ARTISANS Preservation of Craft Award in New York. This year, Laila has been conferred the Padma Shri.
On behalf of the Welham Girls Alumni Association, and indeed all Welhamites, heartiest congratulations on this honour. Well and truly deserved for your work in promoting the traditional arts and ensuring that the artisans are properly compensated and receive their fair share of recognition. An inspiration to so many of us!

Ranjit Singh Bearerji's son, Sandeep was operated at Fortis Hospital on Sat, July 9. Both his hip joints had been destroyed and he had been on a stretcher for about two years. The surgery was successful and much to our amazement, by Monday, he was on his feet! He has now returned to Dehradun with the promise that he will complete his School education which he had to abandon due to his condition. Fortis very magnanimously bore 50% of the cost of the surgery and WGAA took on the other half. On behalf of WGAA and the We-Care initiative, I'd like to thank all those who contributed towards the surgery and made it possible. The child has got a new lease to life!

In response to our appeal from WE-CARE, we have received some very generous donations amounting to over Rs.1,40,000/-from the following Exies:

Many thanks to all of you for this timely help. You will be happy to know that we have increased the supplementary amount that we are sending to some old teachers from Rs.2000/- per month to Rs.3,500/- per month. They are really happy and grateful for the same and showered us all with blessings. We have also managed to get assistance for Ranjit Singh bearer ji's son by way of a 50% discount from Fortis Hospital who have taken over the case. We hope that the surgery is successful and the child is able to live a life of dignity.

Ranjeet Singh bearerji has been working in School for 35 years. His 18-year-old son has developed a debilitating disease that has destroyed both his hip joints, and left the child immobile. He has been asked to have a bilateral hip replacement surgery that will allow him to live a decent life. Approx Rs. 3,30,000/- will be required for the surgery.
Reaching out to all Exies to contribute generously towards the WE-CARE fund set up by the WGAA to meet the cost of his treatment.

We had a successful fundraiser on the 2nd of December,2009. It was a play by Aamir Raza Hussain and was followed by dinner held at ITC Maurya. The evening was enjoyed by all attendees.
